Current Research

Lunar Evolution: Remote compositional analysis of lunar regions using telescopic and spacecraft multi-spectral data. Science questions focus on formation and evolution of the lunar crust and character and diversity of mare basalt types. Craters are used as probes to the interior.

Laboratory Spectroscopy Experiments: Measuring and modeling the interaction of visible to mid-infrared radiation with geologic materials. Development of quantitative methods for extraction of compositional information. Includes measurements and analyses of lunar samples and meteorites.

RELAB: NASA multi-used spectroscopy facility at Brown.
Spectroscopy Subnode: Selected public domain spectroscopy databases.

Asteroid-Meteorite Links: Evaluating observational and experimental data to identify asteroidal source bodies for various meteorite types. Science focus on evolution of the early solar system.

Space Weathering: Determining the processes responsible for altering materials in the space environment and measuring the effects of these processes on samples.

Planetary Exploration: Definition of science issues and implementation strategy for small bodies and the terrestrial planets. Principal Investigator of Aladdin, a Discovery mission to return samples from both moons of Mars (finalist in the 1997 and 1999 selections).

Clementine Science Team: Participation in planning, implementing, and calibrating the data recently returned from the Clementine spacecraft. Development of calibration approaches and tests for the spectral integrity of the UVVIS camera, including ground truth measurements of lunar samples.

Clementine Calibration: Summary of calibration steps.

International Collaboration: Spectroscopic analysis of Luna soils, meteorites, and meteorite analogues with several scientists from the Vernadsky Institute, Moscow. Geologic analysis of lunar multi-spectral images with scientists at Kharkov University, Ukraine, DLR, Germany, and CNES, France. Promoting and assisting in planning international exploration of the Moon with Japan, Europe, and Russia.

Over 120 research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including a book Remote Geochemical Analyses (Cambridge University Press). See Articles and/or Abstracts.
