Science en Español

Students from the Perry Middle School Bilingual 7th grade visit the Feinstein IMAX Theatre with Science En Español Scholar Gloria Gutierrez (left front) to watch the 3-D presentation The Making of the International Space Station.

A Bilingual Science Education Program developed with the input of teachers from local bilingual classes. Brings science to inner-city bilingual and Spanish-speaking children by developing a program of classroom visits to, and joint projects with, bilingual students at the elementary and middle school levels. We actively recruit native Spanish-speaking undergraduate students for this program.

We usually have two undergraduate SEE Scholars each academic year. We currently partner with a third grade bilingual classroom at Flynn Elementary and a seventh grade bilingual classroom at Perry Middle School.

Our scholars partner with the teacher to bring space-related science activities to the classroom. They also act as mentors to the students, modeling successful male and female Latino students at the college level. We like to say that our scholars put a face on science for the K-12 students who might otherwise never interact with a "real" scientist. By working with our scholars, who may look and act like brothers or sisters, the students are encouraged to think of a science career as achieveable and engaging.
